Biggest Independent Fundraiser ever for Hospice!

Richard Phillips from Head Office Hairdressing Salon in Uvongo approached our Fundraiser, Bt King, in 2013, advising that a group of friends wanted to hold a Pool competition in order to raise funds for South Coast Hospice in memory of their two friends who passed away  as a result of cancer.

He advised they would like to hold the pool competition at “The Pigs ear” Pub in Uvongo. When asked what South Coast Hospice would have to do, the answer was, nothing, just bring the banners and be present for the handover of the money raised on the day.

Richard and his friends arranged for all the prizes, a trophy, a Braai with salads for all competitors and spouses on the day, and South Coast Hospice was handed a cheque of R12500.00. At the handover, a sponsor, Vaughan Geldenhuys  from  Global  Packaging Concepts in Gauteng, was so moved by the amount collected that he donated another R5,000 and this brought the income to R17,500.

At the beginning of 2014, Richard contacted Bt again, advising that they were again going to do the fundraising event, and that some more friends had passed on, therefore they were aiming bigger this year.

They sourced 4 big prizes which they put together and did a Raffle at a cost of R10 a ticket. They formed a Committee with a Chairman, Vice Chairman and a Treasurer to control the fundraising, and the men got down to raising funds.  Vaughan did a sterling job with his friends and business contacts in Gauteng and the pool competition was well supported by local and upcountry friends who had hearts for South Coast Hospice.  They also asked all friends to donate a bottle towards an “on the day” raffle. This was very well supported and generated a sizable income as well. They approached Winston Smile, a local singer/ entertainer to play at the event. He donated his time and fee towards the event.   What a talent, what a singer.

Once again, South Coast Hospice just took their banners on the day of the event, to Pigs Ear Pub in Uvongo, and waited with great anticipation of what the donation would be at the end of the day. Diane Van Dyk, the CEO of South Coast Hospice, Sr. Sheila Smook, who is in charge of our Urban Home Care Department, Bt King Fundraising Co-ordinator and Darryl King Fundraising Assistant, were present for the handover.

The moment arrived, and what a shock, a cheque to the value of R100000.00 was handed over to Diane Van Dyk. The whole pub became silent and then a guffaw of noise as each and everyone realised the amount that had been raised. This is the biggest donation event that South Coast Hospice has ever received from an outside organized event.

A big thank you to, Richard, Mick, Vaughan and friends, for organising this amazing event.

Thank you to the owners of Pigs Ear Pub for the wonderful venue, the service and the salads provided on the day for the braai, the sponsor of the braai and meat,  to each and every person who donated money, bought a raffle ticket, attended either to support the players or just to enjoy the day and the atmosphere.
The whole Hospice team salute you all for having a heart for Hospice.
